Blazing New Trails for the Women’s Income Generating Group
2016 was a productive year for Shanti Uganda and we are looking forward to similar successes and exciting new projects in the coming year!
As you may know, Shanti Uganda started as a women’s group which focused on helping local community members participate in income-generating activities. While we have focused many of our recent efforts on the maternal health aspect of our programs, we are excited to announce a new transition for this group in 2017.
In the coming year, the Women’s Income Generating Group (WIGG) will focus on individual business planning and formation. Beginning in February, the long-time members of WIGG will begin intensive training programs to begin creating their own businesses. This will be a multi-phase initiative and will cover a variety of topics relating to business creation.
First, WIGG members will partake in brainstorming sessions to determine which business ventures they are interested in. These might range from animal husbandry and tailoring to soap and jewelry making.
Next, they will participate in workshops with topics ranging from business planning and marketing to product development and sales. These will feature presentations from local and regional community members who have specific knowledge and background in these topic areas. Specifically, we will bring in a variety of successful female entrepreneurs to share their stories and best practices.
Finally, when women feel ready to begin their own ventures, they will build their businesses with grant monies provided by Shanti Uganda. In order to guarantee sustainability and progress, WIGG members will undergo routine monitoring and evaluation procedures. In addition, there will be consistent WIGG group meetings to address any concerns, questions and areas for improvement. WIGG members will continue to be part of the Shanti Uganda family long after their businesses are off the ground!
We are all thrilled to announce this new direction for the WIGG program! In order to fund both the training and grant portions of this project, we are looking to raise $3,900. All monies will go directly toward support, training and business creation for the WIGG members. Ultimately, Shanti Uganda hopes to support local women in the Luweero community as they blaze new trails for themselves and their families. Please considering donating to this wonderful project to help these women gain the confidence and tools they need to succeed!
