Since 2008,the Shanti Uganda Society has employed 21 HIV positive mothers and grandmothers through our Women’s Income Generating Project. The project’s purpose was to improve the socio-economic conditions of these women by giving them marketable skills training and business experience.
The 21 group members were trained in tailoring and in creating handmade jewelry from recycled paper. In the eight years the project has been running, the group members have made thousands of products, which have been sold throughout North America, with profits going directly to the women group members.
Over the years, the group has also received other trainings. Small scale farming projects in sustainable agriculture were presented, particularly in growing garlic, mushrooms and tomatoes. Business presentations included the role of small loans and credit, as well as discussions around ways to reinvest their profits.
At this stage, we are pleased to report, the project has reached its goal: the group has reached a stage where the members are capable of becoming successful independent entrepreneurs. Indeed, many have already started side businesses, using the skills learned at Shanti Uganda. To wind down the project, in the next month, all women will receive intensive business training aimed at developing their own business plan and preparing them for a future as a private business owner. All graduates will be given a grant to start a small business and continue to receive mentoring from Shanti Uganda. As a result, the graduated members will become empowered and are able to provide the basic needs for their families and their future.
We are so proud of the amazing work these women have accomplished over the past eight years. Although one project is ending, it is the beginning of a new and bright future forour women’s group members and we are excited to see them a new and bright future of themselves and their families.
We want to thank everyone who have donated to the project over the years or in any way supported the women’s group members.
