In India an incident of domestic violence is reported about once every five minutes. Therefore, our Women on Wheels programme helps disadvataged women understand their rights and empowers them to defy prevailing harmful traditions and beliefs. We're empowering women to not only gain well-paid employment with dignity, but also to become confident and independent individuals.
Your generous support enabled us to provide gender and violence training to 18 women in North Delhi in November last year. Thank you on behalf of all the women whose lives you've helped change.
Women like Chitra who said about the training: “It was an eye opener for me. I thought that whatever is happening to me is my fate, but for the first time I realized that it is not about fate, it is bigger then that and I must prepare myself to counter it.”
And trainee Arti who said: “Apart from learning about discrimination and violence against women, the information regarding various laws and support organisations is very useful. I will use it, not just for me but also for other women I know and who need this information”.
And also Navina who noted: “I have never known about these issues before. This training has raised more questions for me, and I am now confident that I will be able to stand on my own as a stronger woman.”
What did the training cover?
The four-day training gave Women on Wheels trainees a full understanding of differences in gender norms for women and men, violence against women and laws in India Judicial System protecting women from violence and discrimination.
The workshop explored topics such as patriarchy and what happens when a man or woman does not act according to norms assigned to their gender. Through group activities and role-plays it also discussed various forms of gender-based violence, including hidden forms that are ingrained in society and social customs, and laws on domestic violence and sexual harassment. The participants discussed their personal experiences, linking them to the wider societal context to gain a thorough understanding of the issues.
This training is a powerful learning experience that enables woman trainees to understand the cycle of violence - which they have accepted as a norm - and that they can and should oppose it.
Thank you for enabling more women to find strength to fight violence they face on daily basis. You are helping create a more equal and violence free India.
