Nine disadvantaged women from various places in India have set on the journey of transformation through Residential Women on Wheels Academy in Jaipur.

Training to become professional drivers, these women will be able to become financially independent and transform their lives and lives of their families for better. Thanks to your support, these women lead the wheel of change in their communities, building the path for more women to become professional drivers. Challenging the ideas of what women could and should do.

Thank you for fuelling their growth and enabling us to spread the concept of women chauffeurs to more places.

Ulupi

Ulupi, aged 32, comes from a farming family in rural Assam. She has three sisters and two brothers. Due to poor economic condition Ulupi only studied up to 10th standard, and at the age of 17 she was forced to get married. After five years of marriage her husband died of cancer, when their only son was only two years old.

Ulupi found herself at a cross road, considering to remarry or start standing on her own feet and taking care of herself and her son on her own. Her in-laws did not allow her to return to her parent’s house, nor they allowed her to work. But Ulupi kept insisting she wanted to earn, until finally, she managed to convince her in-laws to let her work for a locally-based NGO.

There she learnt about Azad’s residential Women on Wheels training and the opportunity to become a professional driver. Straight away she decided to join, wanting to build her own identity and a better future for her son. With support of her parents, Ulupi enrolled for Women on Wheels Academy and started the training in May 2016.

After completing the training, she got employed by an organisation in Assam, driving a big car, Mahindra Bolero. In her new role, she regularly meets various government officers, and inspired people within the government and corporate houses to explore sending more women from Assam for the Academy.

She feels proud to be able to earn herself, being able to pay for education and other needs of her son and not being dependent on others anymore: I have been able to develop an identity and confidence thanks to becoming a professional driver.’

How it works: WoW Academy

We identify suitable like-minded partner organisations from various locations across India, which are interested in providing underprivileged women with the opportunity to get well-paid jobs in professional driving. They identify women for the residential training that takes place in our training centre in Jaipur over a period of 4-6 months.

The trainees live together in a secure hostel, taking all the Women on Wheels classes with other trainees in Jaipur. Following our Women on Wheels training curriculum that comprises technical, self-empowerment and self-development modules, the women not only acquire driving skills but also awareness on legal and gender rights and a range of soft skills such communication, English language and self-defense. They find their inner strength to take charge of their lives.

Once they complete the training, they go back to their hometowns to undertake the test for permanent license. The partner organisations help them find jobs as chauffeurs with families or organisations.

Last year, nine women from Bikaner and Kota in Rajasthan, Pune in Maharashtra, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, and Assam studied at the Academy in two batches, with the last batch just finishing the training. Three women from the first batch are already employed – as private chauffeurs as well as instructors in a driving school!

As they complete the training, the women are able to stand on their own feet, making decisions about their lives and creating better future for themselves, their families, children.

They are strengthening the force driving the change for resource-poor women, enabling them to be independent, free of oppression, violence and control. So are you. Thank you.
