The women's cachama projects progressed to its next phase: delivery and release of the baby cachama fish in the now well built and maintained pools in each community!
A very dry season in the Amazon slowed down the plans a bit, but when the rain returned the cachama were brought to Sani Isla, Hatun Urku, Munditi Urku, Isla Flor Amazonico, and Flor de Pantano and the over 100 women (and men!) who are a part of these organizations.
Releasing the fish was an exciting day in the communities as it signified the evolution of the women's projects and a successful step forward towards creating sustainable income and economic security for themselves and their organizations.
We decided to expand the project to extend support to families who have or want individual cachama pools, as it will be an additional help to families in need of greater food security and whose lack of income make growing their own food very helpful financially.
We also coordinated training and capacity building activities with our partner, Centro Lianas, to continue to expand the womens' skills, confidence, and capacities.
Some other exciting news from the community: Hatun Urku women (Urku Sisa Warmi) are constructing their own building like the Sani Warmi house in Sani Isla, and the women in Munditi Urku are following their lead! The women in these organizations are gaining confidence in their abilities and projects and so are taking the intiaitve to work as a community in mingas to build important foundations for future growth of their projects together.
We also supported the school in Flor de Pantano to expand their environmental education programming that they do with their students, including the restoration they do due to the heavy deforestation that has happened around the community.
We're excited to see the cachama grow and to track the impact of this project as the year progresses. We'll also be majorly expanding the project soon, so stay tuned!
