Men Supporting Girls' Education and Skills

In many communities, girls and women still have fewer opportunities to continue their education or join Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Their participation in both formal education and skills training remains much lower than that of men. As a result, many women have limited access to jobs, income-generating opportunities and financial independence, which also makes them economically weaker and more dependent on their families.

Keeping this situation in view, a community seminar was organised to mobilise men and encourage them to play a more supportive role in the education and skills development of girls. The idea was simple: if fathers, brothers and other male family members support girls in studying and learning practical skills, many of the barriers they face at home and in the community can be reduced.

Renowned educationists and TVET experts spoke on the occasion. They discussed the importance of girls completing their education and also learning market-relevant technical and vocational skills. The speakers explained that education alone may not always be enough in today’s changing job market, and that practical skills can help girls find employment, start small businesses or earn an income from home.

The discussion also focused on changing traditional attitudes towards girls’ education and employment. Men were encouraged to give girls the confidence and space to choose suitable skills, join vocational institutes and explore livelihood opportunities. Participants also discussed some of the practical difficulties faced by girls, including family restrictions, lack of mobility, limited information about training opportunities and concerns about travelling to training centres.

The seminar remained interactive, with community members sharing their views and experiences. It helped reinforce the message that improving the economic position of women cannot be achieved without investing in their education and skills. Men have an important role in making this possible by supporting the girls and women in their families to study, learn a skill and become economically active.

The activity was a useful step towards creating a more supportive environment where girls are encouraged not only to continue their education but also to gain the skills they need for a more secure and independent future.
