Polar Bears to Beavers 1st Quarter 2022

By David Bancroft | Executive Director

Beavers are flooding the warming Alaskan Arctic threatening fish, water and Indigenous People’s traditions.  A thawing of permafrost has permited large number of beavers to move into the Arctic, while Polar Bears are finding less suitable habitat. That is bad news because beaver-built wetlands can exacerbate the release vast stores of greenhouse gases to further warming the climate, and Native peoples are already feeling the rodent’s impacts.

Your generosity enabled IAIA to make gains in implementing its Climate Change Action Plan.  This includes:

  • A partnership that IAIA has reached with a national government to reach climate change goals will help assess reductions in greenhouse gases in the energy sector resulting from a major shift of the fuel mix towards the production of more renewable energy.  IAIA will be to developing key Strategic Environmental Assessment guidelines for the world to use in evaluating  hydropower, solar, wind and bio-energy production.
  • IAIA has secured a second partnership to conduct information gathering and organize activities to support a series of dialogues among the technical and legal community. These activities will help to identify approaches, methodologies, laws, regulations and other tools that can use to modify or amend the legal and institutional framework and implementation of impact assessments and strengthen climate change mitigation.

Lastly, please know that your support has assisted significantly, however, the Polar Bears still need your help.  In addition, our progress has been slowed due to a lack of funding.  If you would please consider another gift the project, we only have only raised $250 of a $360k goal.  https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/wise-climate-change-action-using-impact-assessment/

Your partnership and support are vital to assisting IAIA meeting its mission.  Thank you again
