Beavers are flooding the warming Alaskan Arctic threatening fish, water and Indigenous People’s traditions. A thawing of permafrost has permited large number of beavers to move into the Arctic, while Polar Bears are finding less suitable habitat. That is bad news because beaver-built wetlands can exacerbate the release vast stores of greenhouse gases to further warming the climate, and Native peoples are already feeling the rodent’s impacts.
