By Amelia Hoover | Senior Manager, Disaster Response
Thanks to your generosity, GlobalGiving’s Wildfire Emergency Response Fund has made its first grant.
The funding is supporting Mikinakoos Children's Fund, a First Nations organization responding to the 2026 wildfires in northwestern Ontario, Canada.
For families forced to evacuate, sometimes with little more than what they could carry, the immediate needs are many. Mikinakoos is helping First Nations children and families access food, clean water, clothing, hygiene products, baby supplies, and other essentials as they navigate displacement.
And this is just the beginning.
From Canada to Spain and beyond, wildfires are disrupting lives and communities. And while the flames may eventually die down, the work of rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods, and preparing for future fires can continue for years.
That's why the Wildfire Emergency Response Fund is designed to do more than respond to active fires. Through this fund, our aim is to support more local organizations helping communities recover from wildfires, prevent future fires, and recover from the damage together when they do occur.
Your generosity helps make that possible. Thank you for helping build a fund that can stand with communities when wildfires strike—and support the organizations that will be there for the work that follows.
With gratitude,
Amelia + the GlobalGiving Team

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.
We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.
They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
