1 in 4 Californian children are living in poverty; over 350,000 children in the nine counties that make up the San Francisco Bay Area are eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch at school. In an area where the cost of living has skyrocketed, families struggle to pay rent and feed their children, leaving no room for purchasing a backpack filled with school supplies. Family Giving Tree strives to close the opportunity gap by investing in these children.
A school admin from one of our partner schools in East Palo Alto explains, “The support that the families get from the backpacks with supplies has been invaluable. Our families struggle to make it in the Bay Area with many of them living multiple families in living spaces that were not designed for multiple families. Without the Family Giving Tree, our families and students would not be as prepared for school.”
We believe that a backpack with school supplies gives endless possibilities to low-income students. Family Giving Tree needs your help to provide 40,000 students with the school supplies they need to succeed. To help break the cycle of poverty through Family Giving Tree’s 2017 Back-to-School Drive, consider making a donation, filling a backpack, leading a drive, or volunteer at our warehouse.
