Summary
Students from low-income households often lack basic school supplies because their families can not afford them. Not having these supplies is a key barrier to learning new skills and keeping up with class and homework. It also destroys confidence and self-esteem as learning becomes a struggle instead of an opportunity to explore and grow. Help students start school knowing they are prepared by supplying the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
In the 11 counties Family Giving Tree serves, 46% of families are classified as low-or very low-income. These families struggle to provide the supplies their children need in the classroom. Their primary financial concerns are food, housing, and clothing. Starting school without supplies seriously impacts learning and can quickly set students behind their peers, impacting their ability to learn successfully and succeed in the years to come.
SolutionWhen students are prepared for school with the materials they need to succeed in the classroom, it positively impacts their learning, provides confidence, and supports self-esteem. It gives them hope for the future and gives their families one less thing to worry about.
Long-Term ImpactEducation is a key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Sending children to school prepared with backpacks and supplies will equip tomorrow's workforce with the skills they need to succeed.
