The Elm Court Weekend Meal Program is an ongoing program for Loaves & Fishes Centers. It operates out of our Elm Court Center in downtown Portland, Ore.,which serves the lowest income and most isolated seniors. Without the hot meals we provide on Saturdays and Sundays, these seniors would have no access to food on the weekends. Many of them live in hotels or in one-room apartments with no access to cooking facilities. Between Nov. 1, 2010 and Jan. 31, 2011, we served 684 seniors at the Elm Court Center. This represents an 8 percent increase over the same time period one year ago. The increase in numbers is due, in part, to the economy but also because baby boomers are becoming eligible for our services. The senior population in the Pacific Northwest is expected to double by the year 2020 and we anticipate that the numbers of seniors we serve will steadily increase. Federal funding does not cover our costs for service on weekends, so we rely wholly on donations from charitable foundations, corporations and individuals to sustain this very necessary service to seniors. We are very grateful to each and every donor who makes a gift to this program through the Global Giving portal.
