Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is considered one of the most effective models of therapy for survivors of domestic violence. It takes 12 sessions of Cognitive Processing Therapy to help a domestic violence survivor grow and heal from their trauma. Our goal is to provide this service, free of charge, to 20 survivors of domestic violence in the greater Lansing, Michigan area in 2026.
Nationally, one in four women will experience domestic abuse in the United States. Nearly 99% of all cases of domestic abuse also have a financial abuse component, making it all the more difficult for women to leave. The Women's Center of Greater Lansing is the only domestic violence focused therapy center in the area. For clients that do not have insurance, we have a five month waiting list to be seen.
If we are able to fully fund this project, the Women's Center of Greater Lansing will be able to bring on an additional therapist trained in CPT to reduce that waiting time and get women the help they desperately need to heal from their trauma and move forward in life.
The potential for positive long-term impact is astronomical. When women are able to leave violent partners, they break cycles of abuse. They become empowered to cultivate meaningful relationships and achieve financial independence. They are able to set their children up for successful relationships and avoid falling into the same cycle of abuse. The community becomes stronger as we lift one another up.
