Water Harvesting Tanks Needed for Families

By Jean Semler | President ChangeALife Uganda

Our school, health center and the local community finally have access to clean water from the new 512' well which we launched July 2014.

But what about our families who live outside of Migyera town?  The well cannot support this rural community which still gets its water each day from the green colored, contaminated rain collecting dams. Our children and families continue to be impacted by illnesses from water born diseases, absenteeism from school due to poor menstrual hygiene, poor latrine and bathroom hygiene.

What is ChangeALife Uganda's plan to bring clean water to these families and improve the hygiene of the community?   Our new WASH program (Water, Sanitation and Health) is the next step.  One objective to be addressed by our WASH program is improved access to safe water for 75 households by December 2017. This will include construction of water harvesting infrastructure to provide clean water for domestic use.

We have 209 children in our sponsorship program who come from low resourced households. We aim to ensure that at least 50% of these families have access to clean water within the next four years. This method is a convenient household option and no energy is required to collect the water.  As such, every year we propose

  • to replace 25 roofs in 25 homes from grass thatch to metal sheets to collect the rain water
  • install gutters
  • install a water collection tank and a
  • filtration system.

Another part of our WASH program is that the beneficiaries will refund 50% in small installments which will be used to scale up the project in subsequent years.

You can help our families access clean water and replace their thatch roof with metal sheeting and install gutters, a collection tank and a filtration system.  Total cost for one house is $1200.
