Laying the Groundwork for Ethiopia's Water Security

Completed clean water project
Completed clean water project

Since our last quarterly update, we have been working tirelessly to execute and finalize our ongoing projects. We are proud to report significant progress in expanding clean water access across Ethiopia, alongside the inspiring growth of our youth-led programs.

Our clean water construction projects in the Sidama and Oromia regions are reaching their final stages. Implementation is proceeding smoothly across four sites in the Jimma Zone of Oromia Region, Ethiopia and two sites in the Bursa Woreda of Sidama Region, Ethiopia. With construction nearly finished, we are now entering the final project phase which is  pipeline installation, building water distribution points (bonos), and fitting faucets. When these projects are completed, these sites will provide clean water to more than 1,600 community members. Building on this momentum, we have selected three additional sites; two in Jimma and one in the Harari region, where work will begin shortly.

Alongside our infrastructure work, our Aware Activate Change (AAC) project has made remarkable strides forward. Designed to engage university students in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) concepts, the university chapters now operate independently under their own action plans. We maintain a supportive role, staying as hands-off as possible to foster student leadership and encourage innovative idea-sharing without interference.

As a result, these established chapters are tackling the water crisis from every angle. They are working to raise funds to sponsor clean water projects, leading school awareness campaigns that emphasize the vital health and sanitation benefits of safe water, and have plans to lobby both national government bodies and international organizations and cohorts to affect change on a larger scale.

Witnessing these young leaders take ownership of the water crisis with such dedication has been inspiring. It represents the realization of our long-held vision, equipping the next generation with the tools, platform, and agency to lead the charge toward universal water access. Temporary fixes and short-term solutions are no longer enough. To solve this crisis, we must take decisive action that lays solid groundwork for generational impact.

As the Ethiopian New Year begins, we renew our commitment to tackling complex challenges, establishing new milestones, and moving beyond temporary aid to build lasting change.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners, supporters, and the GlobalGiving platform for making this work possible.

Happy Ethiopian New Year! Here is to another year of progress, hope, and fundamental change.
