This month has been very productive for Mpoma! Peter (Mpoma's manager) and the Mpoma Community HIV/AIDS Initiative team visited the village of Mukirumba a few weeks ago to hold a WASH village meeting. The meeting was attended by local council committee members, water user committee members, general community members, and even children as shown in some the photos below!
The meeting addressed themes of handwashing, latrine management, safe water chains, and community empowerment.
Through these meetings and training sessions, Mpoma creates community based motivation to practice healthy WASH habits. In our latest skype call, Peter shared with us his sense of happiness and pride as the children of Mukirumba attentively participated in the training session. As these children continue to learn about the importance of WASH practices, they will share these strategies with their families and friends to bring about community wide changes that will improve health outcomes for hundreds of individuals.
Additionally, our sanitary pad project is growing and improving! In the coming week, Ruth, a member of the Mpoma team, will be teaching sixty-five girls how to build reusable sanitary pads. This initiative has strongly affected the community as many girls are no longer being forced to leave their educations due to a lack of resources to manage their menstruations.
In our latest skype call, Peter invited a young girl at the Johnson Nkosi Primary School to come speak with us about how the sanitary pad project has affected her life. She told us how being able to use a sanitary pad has been a very positive experience and how she has taught her mother how to construct one as well. We are thrilled with the positive effect that this project is having on the lives of young, confident, motivated women and hope to continue expanding and evaluating the project!
Three students from our chapter will be visiting Mpoma in a few short weeks and are excited to work with our our partners in person to continue evaluating and improving our project!
