Project Report | Apr 19, 2017
March 2017

By Caroline Fernandes | Director of Partnerships

This month was a productive month for Mpoma! The team continued to visit each WASH community to follow up with WUCs (Water User Committees) and make sure each program was running smoothly. This month there was a drought so the water sources in many communities in the Nama sub-county area were dry, however, Peter (Mpoma’s manager) informed us that communities with water sources that we funded did not have a problem retrieving water. This is because we train WUCs to attend to their boreholes and make repairs throughout the year when needed. Recently the borehole in Kiriumba Village (Kasenge Parish) was repaired using the funds accrued from routine water user fee collections. This source serves around 1,000 people/day so it is key to make sure that everything is running smoothly.

Kyampysi, one of our newer villages recently elected people to be a part of their dedicated WUC. This village actually was one of the two control villages that GROW used as part of their research on the effectiveness of GlobeMed and MCHI funded WASH programs. We are so excited that they have progressed so much since we first visited them!

The Sanitary Pad Project is also thriving! Ruth, the main Mpoma member in charge of this project organized a new training for 65 Johnson Nkosi girls to learn how to make and take care of reusable sanitary pads. Since the project started last summer, there have been no complaints! One parent even came to the school to personally thank Mpoma for providing the resources to make these necessary items. Making such resources available to young girls is key to preventing them from dropping out of school once they start menstruation.

At our last Skype call, Peter reminded me of Mpoma’s slogan: “Lets change the way change happens”

Indeed, without action there is no progress! We are so proud of the initiative we have taken together in order to better the lives of individuals in the communities that we serve.

Thanks,

Caroline Fernandes
