February was an exciting month for Mpoma! The MCHI team mainly focused on mobilizing the village of Busale. Currently, we have established a safe water source for the people there but they do not have a Water User Committe (WUC). Electing a group of individuals to manage the source and educate the community on safe water and hygiene practices is an important component of our project and contributes to our mantra of sustainability.
In a recent Skype call with Peter, Mpoma's manager, I learned that the organization has decided to partner with a woman from New York, Sarah, to sell the beaded jewlery that the children make. I was excited to hear about this new partnership as profits could potentially go towards our Sanitary Pad Project, and provide girls with an opportunity to pay for materials without sole dependence on GlobeMed funding. The project is still going on, and the girls from Johnson Nkosi have been using the drying structure and pads without any issues so far. Soon a new group of 30 girls will be trained by the female teachers on how to make their own pads as well as how to properly wash and dry them.
Ryan, our new GROW coordinator also meet Peter over Skype for this first time. I was so excited for them to talk face to face! The new GROW team is excited to work with MCHI this summer.
Peter recently sent me photos of the Biannual Meeting that happened a few weeks ago. The themes for the training were as follows:
I have attached them below. I'm excited to see what we can accomplish next month!
