Since November, three students from our chapter have been preparing to work onsite in the Nama Sub County of Uganda to monitor and evaluate the water access, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) project. They arrived on ground in mid June and will spend the following eight weeks working closely with our partner organization, the Mpoma Community HIV/AIDs Initiative (MCHI).
Over the next couple months they will travel to the villages in which the project has funded boreholes to assess how local communities are maintaining the quality of water sources and if the sanitation and hygiene education conducted by MCHI is being practiced. They will also be collecting community feedback on how the project can better suit the needs of the community. Additionally, they will be teaching elementary school children at Johnson Nkosi Memorial Primary School about WASH twice a week and about reproductive health once a week. They are also working on improving the efficiency of the sanitary pad project that was started two years ago as a part of the WASH project. This sub-project provides girls with materials and training to make reusable sanitary pads, that allow them to continue their education when they reach puberty. MCHI and our team onsite will also host a biannual meeting for water user committees in which they will share strategies on how to empower their communities to maintain water sources and practice healthy sanitation and hygiene practices.
The grassroots onsite work team is documenting their internship in Uganda through weekly blogs. These blogs will discuss project updates as well as give insight into their personal experiences in Uganda. They can be viewed on https://globemedatuclagrow.wordpress.com/.
In the past few months our GlobeMed chapter has also undergone its annual elections and the new team is very excited to continue improving the project over the next year. For the next few months we will be recruiting new members to our chapter and will have our 2018-2019 chapter ready by October.
