The 2025 W.TEC She Creates Camp successfully empowered 40 teenage girls from different public schools with essential skills and knowledge in Artificial Intelligence, Environmental sustainability, Technology, and Personal growth. Through a combination of classroom learning, hands-on projects, and excursions, participants gained practical experience in utilizing artificial intelligence, addressing environmental issues while also being equipped with leadership, financial literacy, and advocacy skills. The camp not only educated the girls on the importance of the world of artificial intelligence and eco-sustainability but also positioned them to become future leaders and innovators in technology-driven environmental solutions.
The overarching mission of the W.TEC She Creates Camp is to increase the participation of Nigerian girls and women in technology for learning, professional growth, and leadership roles. Through this initiative, W.TEC continues to empower young girls and women to become creators of technology, skilled in content development and the creation of practical tech solutions.
KEY FOCUS AREAS FOR THE 2025 CAMP
The 2025 edition of the W.TEC She Creates Camp was held under the theme “Byte by Byte: AI for Action.” Over the course of two weeks, participants were equipped with the knowledge and tools to harness the growing demand of utilizing artificial intelligence and technologyin tackling the Internet of things (Iot), Robotics and in addition to environmental challenges. Through a rich STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curriculum, the camp empowered teenage girls to become both tech innovators and environmental advocates, while also nurturing their personal and professional development
The Camp Sessions
The following topics were taught at the camp:
To evaluate how effectively the camp met its objectives, we measured the impact of its activities on our participants using two main tools, which were:
Pre-Camp Evaluation Test: At the start of the She Creates Camp, the girls completed a set of open-ended questions designed to assess their initial understanding of the camp’s theme, “Byte by Byte: AI for Action,” as well as their interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This exercise gave them the chance to share responses based on their existing knowledge and perspectives.
Post-Camp Evaluation Test: At the close of the camp, the girls completed a follow-up assessment with questions similar to the pre-camp test. This evaluation measured the knowledge and skills they had acquired over the two weeks, highlighting growth in areas that were previously unfamiliar before the intensive technology sessions.
COMPARISON OF PRE- AND POST-EVALUATION RESULTS AND FINDINGS
The 2025 She Creates Camp had a clear impact on participants’ STEM confidence and exposure. At the start, 63% of the girls had never participated in a STEM programme, yet by the end, all participants had engaged in hands-on projects addressing environmental challenges. Similarly, while only 48% initially felt confident applying STEM to solve problems, this increased to 93% after the camp.
Knowledge and awareness also showed significant improvement. Before the camp, only 38% of participants were very familiar with environmental issues, but after the camp, 63% rated their knowledge as excellent and 37% as good. Interest in STEM careers rose from 78% before the camp to 100% after, with every participant reporting that the career talks and documentaries helped shape their understanding of STEM pathways.
Mentorship played an important role in this transformation. Prior to the camp, just 38% of participants had a female role model in STEAM, but by the end, 95% had been introduced to a mentor, strengthening their confidence and aspirations. Beyond technical knowledge, the camp also nurtured leadership and problem-solving, with over half of the participants rating themselves excellent in these areas. Importantly, 95% of the girls felt better prepared to plan their future career paths because of the camp.
The evaluation results clearly demonstrate that the 2025 She Creates Camp successfully equipped participants with practical STEAM skills, strengthened their confidence, and deepened their awareness of environmental issues. The camp not only bridged gaps in prior exposure to STEAM but also inspired 100% of participants to consider careers in science and technology fields. By connecting the girls with female mentors, fostering teamwork, and encouraging leadership, the camp provided both the technical knowledge and personal guidance needed to shape their future aspirations. Overall, the programme made a measurable impact on preparing the next generation of girls to become problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders in STEAM.
CONCLUSION
Since its inception in 2008, the W.TEC She Creates Camp has been a transformative annual event, embodying W.TEC’s unwavering commitment to reshaping young girls' perspectives on technology and opening a world of opportunities for them. By addressing the knowledge and skill gaps among these girls, the camp has consistently guided them on their career journeys.
The W.TEC She Creates Camp continues to achieve its core mission of inspiring and supporting girls in pursuing technology-related careers. It provides them with valuable insights, positive career guidance, and access to a strong network of tech-savvy alumni and mentors. This network allows participants to connect with female role models in the tech industry, fostering an environment of support and empowerment.
Looking ahead, W.TEC remains dedicated to increasing the participation of Nigerian girls and women in technology. Our programs will continue to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to become technology creators, proficient in content development and practical tech applications. Through our collective efforts, we will empower girls and women to make significant contributions to their social and economic growth, paving the way for a brighter future driven by technology and innovation.
