Project Report | Aug 27, 2024
SHE CREATES CAMP

By Osaro Diamond Oshomoji | Programme Coordinator

Dear Partners,

We hope this message finds you well, we are delighted to present our report updating you on the progress of this year's SHE CREATES CAMP. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in our journey, and we believe this report offers valuable insights into our ongoing activities. The 2024 SHE CREATES CAMP has been concluded successfully, with your invaluable support playing a pivotal role in its execution.

Please find the details of our progress outlined below.

The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) successfully concluded the 17th edition of the She Creates Camp, a two-week residential STEAM camp, from August 4th to August 17th, 2024. This year's camp was focused on environmental sustainability, aiming to empower secondary school girls with STEM-based concepts and equip them to become future leaders in addressing pressing global environmental challenges.

This year, the camp trained 19 teenage girls from various schools and diverse backgrounds. The participants, aged 13-17, engaged in a wide range of activities, workshops, and excursions designed to deepen their understanding of environmental sustainability and introduce them to innovative technological solutions.

The 2024 She Creates Camp was centered around the theme "Eco-sustainability with Tech" The curriculum was designed to inspire and equip the girls with the knowledge and skills necessary to become environmental advocates and innovators.

The camp featured the following key focus area:

Sustainable Energy Solutions: Participants explored renewable energy sources, such as solar energy and they learned about enviromental sustainability practises as regards their immediate enviroment . The participant built a project called the solar city project where they created an automated solar tracking system. This tracking system is a mechanism that adjusts the position of solar panels to follow the sun's path throughout the day, maximizing the amount of sunlight captured, the sunlight accumulated during the day is used to power the solar city

Waste Management: Hands-on workshops on waste management allowed the participants to learn about recycling, upcycling, and the importance of environmental stewardship. They were taught practical ways to reduce waste and promote a culture of recycling. The participants built a Bio-gas project that converts organic waste into biogas through a process called anaerobic digestion.

Technology Integration: The camp introduced the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and software innovation to address environmental issues. The girls worked on projects that applied these technologies to solve real-world problems related to waste management and clean energy.

Personal and Professional Growth: In addition to environmental science, the camp also provided sessions on: Gender & Leadership, Choosing the right career, Self defence, Sex education, Etiquette, Financial literacy, Creative design using Canva, Gender advocacy & Physical fitness.

Excursions and Practical Learning:

To complement classroom learning, participants had the opportunity to visit two prominent waste management companies focused on Enviromental sustainability:

Visit to Wecyclers: The paricipants visited Wecyclers, where they observed how waste materials are sorted and managed for recycling. This experience provided them with a practical understanding of the recycling process and the importance of waste management & enviromental sustainability.

Visit to Sonnex: At Sonnex, the participants learned about the step-by-step process of recycling. The visit allowed them to see the real-world application of concepts discussed in the camp, further solidifying their understanding of the recycling industry.

Outcomes and Impact

The She Creates Camp successfully achieved its objectives of educating, inspiring, and empowering 19 young girls. By the end of the two-week program, the participants had developed greater awareness of environmental issues, gained valuable insights into STEM careers, and acquired practical skills in technology and leadership. The exposure to real-world sustainability practices through excursions and workshops has equipped the girls with the confidence and motivation to take action in their communities.

The 2024 She Creates Camp has not only provided participants with knowledge and skills but has also inspired a passion for sustainability and innovation. We believe that by equipping these young girls with the tools to drive meaningful change, we are cultivating a generation of leaders dedicated to building a more sustainable and equitable world.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to GlobalGiving team, your contributions have been instrumental in the success of the She Creates Camp and have enabled us to reach more beneficiaries. We look forward to your continued support as we strive to make a positive impact through our programs.

Thank you for being a vital part of our journey to empower the next generation of female tech leaders and environmental advocates.

Warm regards,

Diamond O. Oshomoji
