Volunteer in Portland Fall 2014
By Regan Nelson | Vice President Community Development

Volunteer in Portland has been busy with a number of volunteer events this fall.
We had a successful event at our partner, Peninsula Children's Learning Center's for their 44th Birthday Party on Sunday September 14th! Our lovely Junior League ladies helped serve cake, ice cream, refreshments and supervise in the always fun bounce house! Peninsula is always grateful for the League's volunteer service as it provides a much needed break for their staff.
We also continued our monthly Children's Book Bank Book Cleanings. At the most recent cleaning, League members cleaned enough books to fill 30 bags for 30 children in underserved schools throughout Portland.

Fall

This month VIP held our first Children's Book Bank Volunteer event. During this event, our volunteers cleaned hudreds of books to be distributed to local children. These books go to children who do not have books in their home.
We also supported Peninsula Children's learning Center in their annual Birthday Party. The time spent there brought joy and laughter to children from low income and at risk homes.
VIP also supported Raphael House's Girls On the Run fund raising events by providing volunteers to the aid stations along the run course. The volunteers provided motivation and encouragement to runners along the way, all in support of Raphael House.

Volunteer in Portland Summer 2014
By Regan Nelson | Community VP
Volunteer in Portland completed it's final volunteer projects before the end of the the League year with a number of volunteer events, including two events at Raphael House: a crockpot cooking event and a Mother's Day Brunch. For the crockpot cooking event, The Junior League brought crockpots and a recipe to the shelter, talked about the recipe, and gave each attendee a crockpot that had been doanted by members of the League. These crockpots in many cases are the only kitchen appliances they women have when they leave shelter. The Mother's Day Brunch was a time for mothers and children, both current and past shelter residents, to enjoy a meal prepared by League members and to celebate their strengths as mothers. Both events were a wonderful success.
Volunteer in Portland also faciliated the delivery of books from Childrens Book Bank to a Portland classroom. The volunteers delivered the book bags and also read books to children in the classroom. These children do not have access to books and the books they received will help promote literacy over the summer when they are not in school and have less access to books.
