Launching a social enterprise

So we have been very busy here at Nepal Youth Foundation UK launching our new social enterprise Kathaa. Kathaa, is our new ethical fashion brand where ALL the profits will go back to Nepal Youth Foundation UK to help more children in Nepal. And what's more the products have been made by the former child slaves that we have given vocational training in commercial tailoring through this project that you helped fund.

Our first range of products are specially designed men's and women's down jackets, available in a range of colours and sizes. They have integrated hoods, made from quick drying fabric, inner zip pockets and come in an easy to pack away zip bag. We have also added a touch of Nepal in the lining and trim.

Freeing Former Child Slaves

We cannot thank you enough for your recent support of our campaign to help train former child slaves in Nepal. With your money we have managed to train eight more women which will have a huge impact on not just their lives but their whole families’ lives and potentially their community. These ladies with your support, will now have the opportunity to earn a decent living or start their own businesses so that they can finally gain financial independence and be completely free from their former lives as domestic slaves.

One of the women we have been helping is Saiti (in the photo.) Saiti was forced into domestic slavery at just 9 years old. She always wanted to study and had had a special interest in sewing too, so when she was freed at the age of 19, she was thrilled to be trained in commercial tailoring by NYF. Saiti says, “I was treated like an animal before, but now I am respected. My life has been transformed and I love it.”

To date we have helped 1,576 girls receive vocational training but there is still a long way to go: almost 3,000 girls, like Saiti, are desperately in need of some form of support (mostly vocational training.) We want to help them enrol in our programme because we know it works: 98% of graduates gain employment or start their own business. This practical, sustainable programme enables these girls to take control of their lives and ensures them independent, economically secure futures.

Our programme was also shortlisted for a 2018 Charity Award in the International Aid and Development category along with only two other charities, which is a fantastic recognition of the project and all the hard work the team have put in.
