In order to best provide oral health care services for the children of our community, we have begun offering services in our two School Based Health Centers, located in local high schools. We have just completed our first year of this oral health initiative, supported by an array of funders, and it proved to be more successful than anticipated. One story that came out of these efforts comes from a young teenager as told by our dental staff.
"A teen from one of our middle schools was recently seen in the clinic. He was originally evaluated two months ago when he came in for vaccines for school eligibility. He had severe dental disease and he was in constant pain and extremely self conscious. He came to the clinic for vaccines on the day when our Expanded Practice Dental Hygeniest was onsite and she was able to fit him in to her schedule and made him a follow-up with the dentist. (He needed an extraction and fillings and work on gingivitis.)
Following treatment two months later, our staff could not believe the difference in the student! He now has no dental pain and he smiles at us without covering his mouth or looking down."
Thank you for being a part of these success stories!
