The Victims of the Tornadoes Fund was established on May 6, 2011 to assist our partner community foundations serving regions impacted by the devastating tornadoes of 2011. To date, the fund has raised $23,783.
The Greater New Orleans Foundation will be distributing funds to the Community Foundation for West Alabama and the Community Foundation of Souhtwest Missouri for short-term emergency relief. More importantly, GNOF will share its expertise in disaster recovery from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 and the BP Oil Catastrophe in 2010 to help these foundation establish long-term strategies to cope with current and future tornadoes. This includes our knowledge and those of our 22 local and national foundations who participate in the Community Revitalization Fund, a 5-year $25 million initiative which is bringing the housing stock lost during Hurricane Katrina in smarter and more equitable ways. We will also share our policy and advocacy work which aims not only to restore communities, including housing, but to build back more resilient communities.
