Thanks for noticing and following our project! Here comes our latest report:
Project Summary
In rural Laos, summer break isn't just a time for play—it is the height of the rice planting season, placing thousands of children at risk of stepping on or picking up unexploded bombs (UXOs) left over from war. Terra Renaissance is conducting urgent Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) across 22 remote villages in Xiangkhouang Province to teach children a life-saving "conditioned reflex" that keeps them safe.
The Challenge: A Deadly Trap Hidden Beneath the Fields
June in Xiangkhouang Province, Laos, brings two major changes: the arrival of heavy monsoon rains and the start of the school summer vacation. For local farming families, this is also the busiest period of the year—the rice planting season.
During these weeks, entire families pack up their belongings and move to small temporary huts near their rice fields. Children naturally accompany their parents, spending their days playing in the surrounding fields and muddy forests.
However, beneath this serene green landscape lies a terrifying, invisible threat. Decades after military conflicts ended, thousands of unexploded cluster munitions and bombs remain buried in the dirt. To an innocent, curious child, a rusty, metal object peeking out of the mud looks like a toy or a ball. A single touch out of curiosity can cause a life-altering explosion.
The Solution: Teaching a Life-Saving "Conditioned Reflex"
To prevent these tragedies, Terra Renaissance's dedicated team is conducting mobile Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) across 22 remote villages.
We know that simply handing out information isn't enough to stop a curious child. Our workshops focus on training children to develop an automatic, life-saving "conditioned reflex":
Interactive Training: We teach children that the moment they spot a suspicious object in the ground, their immediate reaction must be to freeze, step back, and yell "Danger!" rather than reach out to touch it.
Testing & Reinforcement: Using educational posters, visual materials, and comprehension tests, we ensure children deeply absorb these safety behaviors.
Community Engagement: We work directly with village leaders and parents to maintain safety awareness even when school is out of session.
Why We Need Your Help NOW (The Urgency)
The monsoon season makes our mission a race against time. Heavy rains wash away topsoil, exposing hidden bombs at the exact moment children are spending long days out in the fields.
At the same time, these torrential downpours turn unpaved dirt tracks into treacherous seas of mud, making it extremely difficult for our field staff to reach isolated villages by vehicle. We cannot afford to wait until the dry season—the danger is present right now. We must keep our field teams moving through the mud to deliver this critical safety training before another child is hurt.
How Your Donation Will Be Used
Every dollar directly supports our mobile teams on the ground in Laos:
$15 provides visual EORE safety posters and educational materials for a village classroom.
$30 funds risk education workshops and comprehension testing for one child.
$75 covers fuel and 4WD vehicle maintenance to help our field staff navigate muddy, impassable roads to reach remote communities.
$150 sponsors a full community-wide safety session, training both parents and children during peak farming season.

Take Action Today
No child should ever lose their life or limb simply because they were playing in a field. By supporting our UXO Risk Education program today, you are giving children in Laos the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe.
Please click the "Donate Now" button to make a gift through GlobalGiving today. Your generosity will keep our team on the road and help protect children's lives across these 22 villages. Together, we can make every field a safe place to grow up.
