Thanks for your support of this project, I'm writing to share a story from ActionAid following last year's earthquake in Myanmar.
After the earthquake, Tel Taw Village was left with more than collapsed homes, itwas filled with broken hearts. Women-led households were already vulnerable, struggling with health issues, single parenthood, and financial hardships. The disaster made their lives even more difficult.
Three women worked tirelessly every day, carrying the weight of their families. Their homes were fragile, barely protecting them from rain and wind. On top of that, they were burdened with debts, making life even harder.
One of the women's households of six faced constant challenges. Her husband, suffering from a paralytic stroke, needed frequent hospital visits, while her eldest daughter sold vegetables at the market to support the family. Tuition fees were often unpaid, leaving the family worried.
Another lived with her 12-year-old daughter, who had to drop out of school due to lack of money. They wake up at 1 a.m. daily to sell vegetables, but it barely covers food and living expenses.
The third kept her school-age children at home while caring for a nursing baby, as she could not afford learning materials or extra tuition, even though school fees were free. Her husband worked irregularly at construction sites, but the income was not enough.
When the powerful earthquake struck in March of 2025, it turned their lives upside down. The earthquake destroyed what little shelter they had. Rebuilding on their own would have taken years, forcing them to live in temporary shelters. Rising prices and slow sales made it hard to cover even basic needs, let alone health or education costs.
Then came a life-changing moment. Generous donors gave these families strong and safe homes. These homes brought not just protection, but stability and hope. The three families were carefully chosen for housing support because of their vulnerable circumstances, including unsafe shelters, large families depending on a single income, health challenges, and financial instability.
During the construction, they could not assist the builders physically because they had to spend most of the day selling vegetables. Still, they offered constant encouragement and heartfelt gratitude that lifted the spirits of everyone working on their homes.
With the security of a safe house, the women are now dreaming bigger. They plan to expand their businesses, send their children back to school, and build a better and sustainable future for the next generation.
The earthquake took these women's homes, but it could not take their resilience. Today, their lives have been transformed, not just by walls and roofs, but by the promise of a future filled with safety, opportunity, and hope.
Thank you.
