In early 2024, President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi issued a public statement advocating for the stoning of LGBTQ+ individuals, citing religious and moral justifications. This statement not only contravened international human rights norms but also incited widespread fear and hostility among the LGBTQ+
in reported cases of violence against LGBTQ+ individuals. Reports from human rights organizations indicated a sharp rise in physical assaults, harassment, and even instances of mob violence. The fear among the LGBTQ+ community was palpable, with many individuals going into hiding or fleeing the country.
Human Rights First Rwanda association Joined the campaign to denounce the president’s speech through press release statements https://rwandainspirer.com/2024/01/03/say-no-to-stoning-of-the-lgbtqi-community-in-burundi-a-call-for-international-solidarity/
The campaign against homophobic attacks on LGBTQ+ individuals in Burundi, following the President's inflammatory statement, highlighted the urgent need for both immediate intervention and long-term advocacy. While significant challenges remain, the collective efforts of local and international organizations have made important strides in protecting LGBTQ+ rights and pushing for broader societal change.
Human Rights First Rwanda Association has continued to give psychosocial support and Legal aid assistance to the Burundian LGBTQ+ refugees.
With your support we can continue fighting for LGBTQ+ rights in the Great Lakes region of Africa
