Project Report: English Classes in Moravia
July 2026 · Moravia neighborhood, Medellín
Context and Purpose
For over 5 years, the Help Colombia Foundation has supported children and families in the Moravia neighborhood of Medellín through an educational program focused on free English-language classes. The project was born from a simple conviction: access to a second language opens real doors for academic and personal growth, especially for communities that have historically had fewer opportunities.
Moravia has a distinctive history in the city: built atop a former garbage dump, it is now home to thousands of families who, through effort and resilience, have transformed the site into a thriving community. Even so, many of these families still face economic and social barriers that limit their children's access to quality education.
The Challenge We Address
Children in Moravia rarely have access to English classes beyond the basic school curriculum, and their families cannot afford private academies or tutoring. Over time, this educational gap translates into fewer academic, professional, and social mobility opportunities. Without a free, nearby, and high-quality space to learn, many of these children simply would not have access to this tool.
Our Solution
To close this gap, Help Colombia sustains an English class program led by a qualified teacher, offering 48 classes a year along with pedagogical materials designed to support each student's learning process. Beyond language instruction, the program provides a space for social support and mentorship for children and their families, strengthening skills, self-esteem, and a sense of community.
A Story That Illustrates the Impact
One of our students joined the program a little over a year ago, shy and hesitant to participate in class. With the steady support of his teacher and encouragement from his classmates, he is now one of the children most eager to raise his hand and practice new English phrases. His mother shares that he now teaches words to his younger siblings at home, and that the program has become something he looks forward to every week. Stories like this remind us why this project matters.
2026 Investment and Budget
For this period, budget figures were adjusted based on the variation in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), ensuring the program's operational sustainability and adequate coverage of its needs.
Annual cost:
English teacher (48 classes): $8,000 USD approx.
This budget is intended to ensure the continuity of high-quality classes, provide adequate learning materials, and strengthen social support for participating children.
Long-Term Impact
Every child who learns English in Moravia gains a tool that can accompany them for life: greater educational possibilities, better future job opportunities, and more confidence to explore the world. Through this program, we aim to generate a lasting effect on the community, turning today's knowledge into real opportunities for social mobility for future generations.
Institutional Commitment
Through this project, Help Colombia reaffirms its commitment to the comprehensive development of the Moravia community, using education as a tool for transformation to generate sustainable impact over time.
The support of our partners and donors remains essential to running this program. Thanks to their trust, we continue building safe, educational spaces for children to grow. We remain committed to transparency, sound management of resources, and measurable results that demonstrate the impact of every contribution received.
