Support Scholars from Burma with a Bonus!

By U Soe Lay | Senior Program Manager

Dear friends of Thabyay Education Foundation,

Thabyay’s programs are designed to support students and key community and civil society workers. We help them to acquire the skills, knowledge, networks and assistance to foster self-directed, sustainable development in their communities and the wider society.

Thabyay’s university scholarships and student counseling contribute to this mission by enabling future leaders from marginalized communities to pursue high quality, relevant university education, and to access the networks and expertise required to participate effectively in the development of their communities upon graduation.

Mang’s father was imprisoned for political affairs in 1998. His mother had the tenacity to initiate the educated generation even though he became homeless. His parents were divorced in 2002. He was sent to a monastery and studied both government curriculum and religious studies there. He stopped schooling at grade 5 since his desired to emphasize in Buddhist studies. He then spent two years learning Parli literature in Yangon and Myaung Mya.

He arrived Phaungdawoo monastic education high school (PDO) in 2005 to restart schooling. The teachers were impressed with his academic commitment and so he was selected to participate as a peer educator in Child Focused Network (CFN), non-governmental organization that works for promoting children’s rights. As a part of this responsibility, he attended some trainings and workshops like Child Rights Awareness in order to serve effectively. At Children’s Day ceremonies, he won the first place prizes for drawing and essay competitions in 2006 and 2008. His writing was published in the monthly journal of CFN. Afterward, he joined the government youth development camp which is built to generate human resources by providing schooling to poor local students. As a government organization, he was trained to be a responsible citizens. Subsequent to high school, he volunteered as an office helper in PDO. Later, he was assigned to teach Social Studies and History in the primary level for two years. In 2003, he was awarded by Kantkaw education center of Thabyay Education Foundation to pursue university preparation program. At Kant Kaw School, he learned various subjects including Academic English, Politics and Social Science by international and native teachers. Additionally, he has completed the first year of English at Distance University.

A native of Chin state in Myanmar, he is determined to learn about Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Rangsit University to apply in development projects of his home town such as Economics Development in Chin State, Myanmar: Microfinance and Building for the Future: Capacity Building for Development in Southern Chin State, and . To improve these sectors is a key to development.

“My community is full of natural resources. The hilly mountains could be difficult in development. However, I hope to advance this region by enriching the political and economic sector. It would encourage the entrepreneurs to invest. I do believe improved politics and economics could bring the way to conquer other threats to development”.
