4 University Scholarships for Students from Burma

Overview

We at Thabyay Education Network’s Arohana Scholarship Fund would like to extend our deep gratitude to everyone (194 people so far) who has donated to our project on GlobalGiving. So far, we have raised a total of US$ 35,223 since the 1st September 2010.

After the deduction of GlobalGiving administrative fees and intermediary bank charges, we have now received a total of US$ 32,524 in disbursements from GlobalGiving.

By July 2011, we had disbursed US$ 29,568 to scholarship awards, leaving a remainder of US$ 2,956. However, one of our scholarship recipients received a scholarship donation from another private source, meaning that he was able to pay back US$ 1,596 of his original grant of US$ 2,000 to the Arohana Scholarship Fund. This meant that the Arohana Scholarship Fund Committee had US$ 4,552 to allocate to new scholarship awards from 4th July 2011 (US$ 2,956 + US$ 1,596).

Selection and awards

Since the last report on July 4th, the Arohana Scholarship Fund Committee has made four further awards totalling US$ 4,552.

The total funds now raised by the ‘University Scholarships for Students from Burma’ project have therefore supported 28 awards enabling 25 students from marginalized communities across Burma to start or continue their Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD studies at universities across Asia.

The recipients of these awards comprise 13 women and 12 men, ranging in age from 19 to 51 (average age of approximately 27), representing nine ethnic groups, studying 19 different majors at 12 different universities in five countries across Asia.

Future Plans

Currently, the Arohana Scholarship Fund (ASF) has disbursed all funds so far received from GlobalGiving. On receipt of a new tranche of funds, the ASF Committee will meet to decide on further awards.

Closing Statement

We hope that this report shows clearly the potential of these scholarship recipients to become catalysts for incremental social change in Burma, and that you can appreciate the direct link between quality higher education and grassroots development in communities in Burma. We also hope that it demonstrates that even the smallest contribution of US$ 10 can make a difference in terms of keeping a Burmese scholarship student in university education.

We would like to reiterate our gratitude to all of you who have helped raise funds for this project by making donations and spreading the word. We hope that this report will inspire you to continue to support us in the future. The beneficiaries of these awards, the students, have individually expressed their gratitude to us for the support they have received. We would like to pass on their thanks to you.

University Scholarships For 2 Students From Burma

Overview

We at Thabyay Education Network would like to extend our deep gratitude to everyone (190 people so far) who has donated to our project on GlobalGiving. So far, we have raised a total of US$35,143 since the 1st September 2010, which is a fantastic result. We were particularly heartened by the support we received on the GlobalGiving Bonus Day on the 16th March 2011, when just under US$3,800 was donated, which was supplemented by almost US$800 in Matching Funds from GlobalGiving.

In our previous report, dated 7th March 2011, we allocated US$5,268 in scholarship awards to 6 individuals, leaving US$82 remaining from funds received by that date. Since then, we have received a further US$5,157 in two installments from GlobalGiving in May and June. Therefore, the funds available for disbursement total US$5,239.

Selection and awards

Since March, the Arohana Scholarship Fund Committee has made two further awards totaling US$2,250. The first award is for a Physiotherapy student to study for a Master's in Rehabilitation Science in the Philippines. Physiotherapy is a little supported profession in Burma, despite widespread needs particularly among the disabled. Therefore, supporting the development of expertise in this field can have significant impacts.

The second award is to support a student to study Education Management in the Philippines. As the education system in Burma is in such a parlous state, individuals such as these are vital to lead the incremental improvements in this sector which will lay the foundations for a better future.

The total funds now raised by the ‘University Scholarships for Students from Burma’ project have therefore enabled 21 students from marginalized communities across Burma to start or continue their Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD studies at universities across Asia.

The recipients of these awards comprise 11 women and 10 men, ranging in age from 19 to 51 (average age of approximately 30), representing nine ethnic groups, studying 18 different majors at 11 different universities in five countries across Asia.

Future Plans

As of 4th July 2011, remaining funds from the ‘University Scholarships for Students from Burma’ project total US$2,989. The Arohana Scholarship Fund Committee will meet again to decide on the next round of awards.

We hope that this report shows clearly the potential of these scholarship recipients to become catalysts for incremental social change in Burma, and that you can appreciate the direct link between quality higher education and grassroots development in communities in Burma.

University Scholarships for 6 Students from Burma

Overview

We at Thabyay Education Network would like to extend our deep gratitude to everyone (172 of you) who has helped us to raise US$29,929 for the University Scholarships for Students from Burma project since the 1st September 2010. Thanks to your generosity, 19 change makers from Burma have been able to start, or continue, their university education in Asia.

In our previous report, dated 3rd December 2010, we allocated US$22,051 in scholarship awards to 15 individuals, leaving US$10 remaining from funds received by that date. Since then, we have received a further US$5,340. Therefore, the funds available for disbursement since 3rd December 2010 total US$5,350.

Selection and awards

The Arohana Scholarship Fund Committee has made six further awards totaling US$5,268. Four of these awards were to new applicants, while two applicants who had previously applied for top-up grants received a second grant to cover their needs.

The total funds now raised by the ‘University Scholarships for Students from Burma’ project have therefore enabled 19 Burmese students to start or continue their Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD studies at universities across Asia.

The recipients of these 19 awards comprise 11 women and eight men, ranging in age from 19 to 51 (average age of approximately 31), representing nine ethnic groups, studying 16 different majors at 10 different universities in five countries across Asia.

Future Plans

As of 7th March 2011, remaining funds from the ‘University Scholarships for Students from Burma’ project total approximately US$82. On receipt of the next tranche of funds from GlobalGiving, the Arohana Scholarship Fund Committee will meet again to decide on the next round of awards.
