Education is a right for all!

By Tali | Marketing & Communications Director

Many of UoPeople's students come from disadvantaged populations such as refugees, immigrants (including undocumented), single mothers, and students whose financial situations leave them unable to afford higher education. This project aims to raise funds to help support UoPeople's efforts and mission to democratize higher education.

As online learning becomes a growing trend worldwide, we believe that education should be a right for all, and not a privilege for a few. This trend of online learning provides the necessary tools to reach those who were previously constrained and unable to access higher education. UNESCO stipulates by 2025, 98 million individuals will be unable to attend university because there won't be enough places at existing universities. Additionally, tuition rates are skyrocketing worldwide. University of the People provides the online tuition-free solution.

University of the People is a tuition-free, non-profit institution. The University does not charge students to take classes, does not charge for any reading and other study materials, as well as does not charge for annual enrollment. As a non-profit academic institution dedicated to opening access to higher education, UoPeople has succeeded in cutting down almost the entire cost of higher education.

In order to remain sustainable, we charge small processing fees for application and examination processing. Applicants are charged a non-refundable onetime $10-$50 Application Processing Fee to cover the cost for us to review and process an application. The amount charged is based on the applicant’s place of residence – applicants from developing countries pay a lower amount. UoPeople charges an Exam Processing Fee of $100 per end-of-course exam. However, for those individuals who are unable to do so, UoPeople has dedicated efforts to creating scholarships and funding sources for students to ensure that everyone who wants a higher education has the opportunity to get one.

A number of its students come from Africa, including survivors of the Rwandan genocide and other regional conflicts, individuals from rural villages, orphans, and women. All of these deserving individuals would lack the ability to receive higher education and an improved future without UoPeople.

University of the People recently teamed up with Microsoft 4Afrika support to 1,000 African students to graduate with a world-class academic degree from UoPeople, helping to change the lives of the students, their families and communities and ultimately transforming the continent. Scholarship recipients may also be eligible to further enhance their skills and experience through participation in additional support programs, including professional training from Microsoft, mentorship by Microsoft employees, internships, and job opportunities with Microsoft and their affiliates in Africa.

Thank you very much for your generous donations.
