We believe that education is a right for all, and not a privilege for a few. During the period of the project, University of the People, continued to provide access to higher education for students around the world. It worked to promote lower education costs and helped democratize higher education. To date, over 1600 students from 141 countries have been accepted.
Many of UoPeople's students come from disadvantaged populations such as refugees, immigrants (including undocumented), single mothers, and students whose financial situations leave them unable to afford even community college. A number of its students come from Africa, including survivors of the Rwandan genocide and other regional conflicts, individuals from rural villages, orphans, and women.
In fact, University of the People teamed up with Microsoft 4Afrika support to 1,000 African students to graduate with a world-class academic degree from UoPeople, helping to change the lives of the students, their families and communities and ultimately transforming the continent. Scholarship recipients may also be eligible to further enhance their skills and experience through participation in additional support programs, including professional training from Microsoft, mentorship by Microsoft employees, internships, and job opportunities with Microsoft and their affiliates in Africa.
UoPeople continued to attract grassroots support- with more people showing their support by joining its Facebook page- and continued to attract media attention- appearing in numerous news articles around the world.
