Ubunye Educare Centre has made significant progress in providing quality early childhood education to 120 children aged 5-6 from low-income households in Dunoon Township, Cape Town.
Key Objectives and Achievements:
- Provide quality Grade R early childhood education: The centre has retained four accredited ECD practitioners to provide education based on the Department of Basic Education guidelines and curriculum.
- Routine health check-ups and nutritious meals: The centre facilitates regular health check-ups and provides healthy meals for the children.
- Parenting skills program: An eight-week home school parent program is facilitated to support parents and guardians.
- Improved infrastructure: A 6m container classroom was donated by Breadline Africa and Hyve Events, enhancing the learning environment.
Parent Involvement:
- Regular parent-teacher meetings: Quarterly meetings are held to keep parents informed about their child's progress and involve them in the educational process.
- Volunteer opportunities: Parents are encouraged to volunteer at the centre, assisting with tasks such as reading stories, fundraising, etc.
- Parental engagement workshops: Workshops are conducted to educate parents on topics such as child development, nutrition, and health.
Achievements:
- 100% attendance rate for children in the programme, indicating a strong commitment to education from children.
- 90% improvement in children's literacy and numeracy skills, as measured by standardized assessments.
- 80% reduction in absenteeism due to illness, thanks to the centre's health and nutrition programmes.
- Establishment relationships with local companies to supply the school with fresh produce which is incorporated in thechildren's meals.
Challenges and Future Plans:
- Limited access to Early Childhood Development centres and healthcare services in the area.
- The centre aims to continue providing quality education, healthcare, and support to the children and their families.
- Future plans include expanding the parental engagement program and exploring partnerships with local organizations to provide additional resources and services.
