By Barbara Borgman | Project Leader and Mom to many
Joy comes suddenly, like the whoosh of a summer rain squall. Within minures, my heart was out of control with celebration, like a mom's heart when all the kids come home for holiday.
It was Youth Day 2025 in South Africa. What a better day to plan, strategize, communicate and fund a homecoming for all the kids Ubuntu Education has funded , that grew up at Kwethu Children's Village? They are scattered over several provinces. On thisYouth Day, here they come to our house, by twos, and fours and fives, until there were a couple dozen of them.
Many hugs and tears of joy later, we counted 18 UPEF sponsored gracuates. with a handful of others stil in school. Going strong in their chosen jobs or struggling to find work in tremendously adverse employment conditions. All happy, all verbally thankful for being supported. "I know where I grew up! You gave me a foundation!. I had nowhere to go, as an orphan, but you gave me a home."
"And you gave me an education! I can never forget" And they won't.
Singing, feasting, laughing, telling stories, dancing, remembering. For me, I received love and appreciation that will last me the rest of the year. How proud I am of these young people. On this day we were thankful beyond words, celebrating each of their perseverance to get diplomas, certificates, honors, and promotions .
I am passing along to you the joy of this wonerful day Making a difference has never looked so tangible: good cars in the driveway, confident gleams in eyes, supporing each other during the hard times, caring and watching out for each other. This is FAMILY at its best.
Going strong as adults starts with safety and health at a young age. We were fortunate these 18 came to the orphan care home as young children. Mentoring, love, good food, fun and joy were staples, as well as parents who never disappeared. .
Thank you for your part in launching people who contribute strong bodies and minds to South Africa. We will keep educating talent, motivation and ambition in young people who are financially challenged. It makes a difference in a country that is working to be strong.
