Greetings Dear Friends,
Last week, we started to do vegetable gardening training for Typhoon Haiyan survivors housed in bunk-houses in Leyte. Bunk-houses are temporary shelters for those severely affected and who have lost their belongings and properties during the typhoon or their areas are considered dangerous for habitation. They are supposed to stay in the bunk-houses for a few months only but given the slow pace of building shelters for them, our estimate is this will take years. So we decided to launch a vegetable gardening initiative and using aavailable spaces around the bunk-houses for gardens as well as to do urban-type vertical gardening and using recycled materials. We are focusing on 2 bunk-houses in Ormoc City with more than 700 families and 3 bunk-houses in Tacloban with more than 900 families.
Last week we were able to do training in the 3 bunk-houses in Tacloban. Aside from the training we distributed garden materials consisting of vegetable seeds, garden tools, organic fertilizer, bamboo poles and recycled containers.
Thanks so much for the generous support from the Global Giving - UK.
Thanks too to the Samaritan's Purse who is providing logistics, materials and other support for the project.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora
