Trust and Truth in Media Report

By Claire Palmer | Philanthropy Director

Internews' Trust and Truth in Media project is an effort to address the concerns surrounding the "post truth" reality we find ourselves facing, where trust in traditional media and civic institutions is at an all-time low whilst propaganda, disinformation, hate speech, rumour and misinformation thrive. By working to quickly respond with the most creative solutions to threats to trusted, independent media worldwide we are able to create local and global impact.

As part of this initiative, Internews is working to support some of the poorest countries to grow their entire media infrastructure and create better-informed societies while keeping freedom of expression alive. Internews' work in Afghanistan demonstrates how we are expanding information access, improving quality news and information, and supporting media and information stability. Today the radio network Internews started in Afghanistan, Salam Watandar (“Hello, Countrymen”), has grown to 74 stations, operating in the rural, isolated parts of the country where three-quarters of the population rely on radio as their primary, and often only, source of news and entertainment.  From the capital of Kabul, Salam Watandar’s production company shares high-quality programmes to the network on current affairs, culture, social issues and sports. They have made a tradition of challenging authorities, running citizen forums and covering feature stories on area schools, sports, and culture.

Last month, Internews partnered with National Geographic to bring Photo Camp, a photojournalism project, to Greece, to improve and provide actionable, local information for refugees and migrants in the region. At the National Geographic Photo Camp, young people from underserved communities, including at-risk and refugee teens, learn how to use photography to tell their own stories, explore the world around them, and develop deep connections with others.World-class National Geographic photographers and National Geographic magazine editors provided students with a personalized, immersive learning experience, inspiring the next generation of photojournalists. Then, through intimate presentations in their own communities and public exhibitions that reach millions of viewers, National Geographic Photo Camp showcases the students’ perspectives on issues that are important to all of us.

In today's world, we utilize media and require information daily. By acting now to ensure that Internews is here for another 35 years to protect free and fair media we can work to develop more projects like these that provide local solutions to create global change.
