Trauma Toolkit for Sex Trafficked Survivors

By Atira Tan | Clinical Director

Thank you so much for donating and supporting the trauma toolkit for sex-trafficked survivors in Asia. Art to Healing primarily works with survivors of child sex trafficking in shelter care, and during their rehabilitation, before they return back to the community.

The trauma experienced from child sex trafficking is unimaginable. In addition, the pandemic has led to an increase in psychological distress, due to death in their families, a loss of income, and loss of safety. This project intends to provide the organizations and survivors with vital trauma resources to decrease psychological distress and increase resilience.

The outcomes of this project are:

  • Providing NGOs with trauma resources and interventions to use in shelter care with beneficiaries.
  • Providing survivors easy-to-use resources through images, worksheets, short videos and audio recordings.

First Phase: Research, needs assessment and curriculum development.

Second Phase: Writing and production of trauma toolkit through videos, audios and manual.

Third Phase: Educating partnering NGOs on the application of the trauma toolkit. Application of trauma toolkit in anti-trafficking shelters.

Fourth Phase: Evaluation of trauma toolkit.

Art to Healing is still currently in the first phase of our project, focusing on a thorough needs assessment with partnering organisations to understand the needs of survivors at present, and building on our past trauma recovery programs and research with both the psychologists and social workers who care for survivors, as well survivors themselves. Our trauma toolkit has been informed by a past project called the Goodness Cards (shown in the photos) where social workers were provided with a resource booklet and cards of ways of how to increase self-regulation and self-awareness for survivors.

Anurishi, a counselling psychologist working in a local anti-trafficking NGO in Nepal shares her experience with Art to Healing trauma recovery programs:

"The program with Art to Healing is one of the gifts of my life. This program has played a precious role to develop my personal and professional capacity. Learning about trauma resources has made me more skilful and regulate myself. I apply these techniques in my own personal life, and feel more strong, empowered and increased in my capacity to help the survivors in shelter care. It has increased my self-confidence to help beneficiaries who have been through trauma. Through these programs, I am healing, and helping others to heal."

Please consider sharing our vital work and donating to our trauma toolkit so that we can support more women and children who have experienced child sex trafficking in Asia.
