Last week I had the privilege of joining two of our remarkable Home Care Team social workers, Chhavelith and Pu Vichet, on their daily home visit rounds. One woman we visited, Ms. Leung, has lived well for many years with HIV. But when her long-term boyfriend passed away of AIDS 6 months ago, Leung lost her home, her support, and the love of her life. To make matters worse, she is now suffering from an abdominal TB co-infection common in people with HIV that requires expensive daily antibiotic injections into her hip– on top of her HIV medications.
The Home Care Team now visits Leung regularly for holistic support. During my time with Leung, she explained to me how painful her daily injection is, which leaves her unable to walk for several hours. But all throughout our conversation, Leung peppered her explanation with jokes, having retained a razor-sharp wit despite her circumstances. She expressed her deep gratitude for all of the support she receives from the Home Care Team to get back on her feet – literally and figuratively.
When Chhavelith asked Leung what she’d like to do for work once she is feeling better, her response was a hearty laugh. “I don’t know, but I’ll just be happy to get moving!” Chhavelith loved her enthusiasm, but gave her some homework – next time we visit, she needs to have at least one idea for her future career.
I am honored be a part of this work, and I am thrilled to have supporters such as you to make it happen. Thank you again from all of us at the Home Care Team.
