Challenge

The primary and secondary schools and the special needs unit in Pomerini, Tanzania, lack adequate textbooks and learning materials with textbooks often shared amongst 10 students. Without access to more computers, students are not developing the skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Without accessing the internet, students and teachers are not benefiting from the enormous range of interactive learning, communication and educational resources available online.

Solution

The recent installation of wireless routers has brought reliable internet access to the schools for the first time. More computers will unlock access to the vast array of online textbooks freely available in Tanzania, expanding and improving students' learning and future career opportunities. Teachers will be able to access online courses and many other teacher development resources. Schools will have access to tools and resources to improve student assessment and school administration.

Long-Term Impact

Access to more computers will transform the learning environment for students at Pomerini's education facilities. With ready access to ebooks and online resources, students' performance and test results will dramatically improve. By bridging the digital divide, students will develop the computer skills essential to their success, and enable their participation in Tanzania's transformation from a predominantly agricultural, rural society to a more diversified modern, multi-sector economy.
