By collecting and transforming plastic bottles before they reach the Lake Kivu and the Congo, the project stops debris from clogging the hydroelectric turbines at the Ruzizi Power Station and like kivu. This ensures the plant can run at full capacity, directly reducing the frequency of electricity blackouts in the city. Large companies like PHC are already using these blocks to improve pathways at their Lokutu and Yaligimba sites.
Ove time, removing plastic from the Congo River and Lake Kivu will allow aquatic life to recover and improve the quality of water sources for millions of people. By replacing cement (which requires high-energy production and long-distance transport) with local plastic waste, the DRC can significantly lower its construction-related CO2 emissions. Unlike asphalt, which melts under extreme tropical heat, or concrete, which cracks during heavy rains, plastic-sand pavers are weatherproof.
