This project will strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare in Uganda's public health facilities by training local maternity workers, establishing Neonatal Care Units, and implementing data-driven quality improvements. Building on our success reducing maternal mortality by up to 55% and improving newborn resuscitation by 61% in partner facilities, we'll expand our proven model to reach more underserved communities, supporting 150,000+ births annually by the end of 2025.
In Uganda, thousands of mothers and newborns die each year from preventable causes. Despite global progress, advancement has stalled since 2015. Women in rural communities face high risks during pregnancy and childbirth due to gaps in quality care, inadequately trained health workers, and lack of essential equipment. These challenges create devastating health outcomes and significant economic burdens on families, limiting women's ability to exercise their full power in society.
We partner with existing public health facilities to implement our comprehensive "Mother & Baby" program. Rather than building new facilities, we provide specialized training for maternity workers, essential medical equipment, and establish Neonatal Care Units. Our approach has led to transformative outcomes, including up to 55% fewer maternal deaths and 61% more successful newborn resuscitations. We ensure sustainability by training trainers and transferring leadership to local health teams.
By scaling our proven approach, we'll support over 1,000,000 mothers and newborns by 2028. Our comprehensive model addresses all phases of maternal healthcare while building sustainable local capacity. The Ugandan Ministry of Health has recognized our program as a model for nationwide scale-up. By improving access to quality care, we empower women, reduce economic burdens associated with poor outcomes, and create a healthcare system that will continue saving lives for generations.
