A new enthusiastic batch at school

By Mayank Sharma | Resource Manager

The 1st batch of Navjeevan Program started their academic session from April, 2018. These students belong to very remote areas of Uttarakhand which does not even have the basic transport facility to their villages which make them completely disconnected with the surround happenings.

We nurtured and prepared these kids and made them ready for their age appropriate classes. To bridge the gap, we followed a concept of learning ladder which are skill based and content based and were provided access to Math lab and Science lab.  Every student started at zero level in English, Math, E.V.S. and computers.

The methodology was based on self – learning methods and teaching through activities. There was no fixed time period and students’ pace was monitored.

They were educated using tools like Jolly Phonics (phonetics), Jodo Gyaan (numerical skills) and Active English (speech and grammar), story books, worksheets were used and behavioural challenges were worked upon.

In mathematics, we used Montessori Approach that is CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial, and Abstract). In concrete level students learn by doing, feeling, observing, touching concrete material (Kinesthetic Learning). Students learnt these concepts by playing games. Visuals were used to explain them things more clearly and relate the concept with real life. They learnt calculating through games, different activities and then practiced it again.

The students were free to use their own calculation method and this helped them to learn more alternative approaches of doing the calculation.  They do mental math through different shortcuts of calculation which improved their time management and get their result effortlessly. IXL online program was also provided to the students to enhance their understanding.

The enthusiasm to learn new skill through different activities and their participation in everything made them stand out.

These students participated in Annual Sports Day races. Renu stood 1st and Nikita came 2nd in Jalebi race. In lemon race, Vikas came 1st and Piyush 2nd. They all participated in school Marathon.

They were the active participants in School Annual Day. They prepared Math lab exhibition and shared about the Navjeevan Program to the guests.

The students were taken on one day trips to Dehradun Zoo, Science Park, FRI, Anchal Dairy and Buddha Temple.

Once fully prepared, the students cleared their exams. After the exam, they were taken for nature walk near the school where they fun learning about different flora and fauna.

The 1st batch of Navjeevan are now admitted into the regular age appropriate classes and are giving their best to compete along with other students.
