TRANSFORM INNOCENT LIVES THROUGH CARDIAC CARE

At the French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC), every child who arrives with a serious heart condition brings with them a family’s hope for a healthier future. For many families in Afghanistan, however, the cost of specialized cardiac treatment remains far beyond their means.

Through our “Transform Innocent Lives Through Cardiac Care” project, we continue to seek philanthropic support to help children and other vulnerable patients access life-saving cardiac treatment. While we have not yet received the level of support we had hoped for through GlobalGiving, the need has not diminished, and neither has our commitment to serving those who need us most.

Continuing Despite the Funding Challenge

FMIC continues to provide care to disadvantaged patients through its Patient Welfare Program and other available resources. Since 2006, 921,923 patients have received free or subsidized care, representing a total of US$65.6 million in free and subsidized healthcare.

These are not simply numbers. Each figure represents a patient and a family who sought care at FMIC, often when they had very few alternatives. For families facing a serious cardiac condition in a child, access to treatment can mean the difference between continued suffering and the opportunity for a healthier life.

Our commitment to patients does not depend on whether a particular fundraising campaign reaches its target. When a child arrives at FMIC with a treatable heart condition, we continue to explore every possible avenue to help.

The Need for Cardiac Care Remains Urgent

Congenital and acquired heart conditions require highly specialized diagnosis, procedures, surgery, medicines, hospitalization, and follow-up. These services can be prohibitively expensive for families already struggling to meet their basic needs.

FMIC has developed specialized cardiac services and a dedicated team capable of providing complex cardiac care. The challenge is ensuring that children from disadvantaged families can actually access these services.

This is why philanthropic support remains so important.

The GlobalGiving project aims to mobilize US$400,000 to support 40 open-heart surgeries and 75 angiography/angioplasty procedures. Every contribution toward this goal can help reduce the financial barrier faced by families seeking potentially life-saving cardiac care.

A Ray of Hope for Families

Despite the limited funding generated through this campaign so far, we continue to share our work with the GlobalGiving community because the need is real and ongoing.

The 921,923 patients who have received free or subsidized care since 2006 demonstrate FMIC’s long-standing commitment to ensuring that financial circumstances do not become an insurmountable barrier to essential healthcare. The US$65.6 million provided in free and subsidized care represents a significant institutional commitment to some of the most vulnerable patients and families.

But the need continues.

Every day, families arrive at FMIC with a child who needs specialized care and a parent who is desperately searching for hope. We want to be in a position to help as many of these families as possible.

With greater philanthropic support, we can extend this assistance to more children with heart conditions, enabling them to receive the treatment they need and giving their families renewed hope for the future.

We may not yet have received the support we hoped for through this campaign, but we have not stopped caring, and we will not stop trying.

We continue this work with the resources available to us, while reaching out to philanthropists and compassionate individuals who can help us do more.

Together, we can give more innocent hearts a chance to beat stronger—and more families a reason to hope.
