Two Decades of Healing Lives: FMIC as a ray of hope

In April 2026, FMIC celebrated its twentieth anniversary, marking two decades of dedicated service to vulnerable communities across Afghanistan. Throughout these years, the institution has remained steadfast in its mission to deliver equitable, high-quality health care, even in the face of profound challenges. This milestone reflects not only the longevity of FMIC’s work but also the profound impact it continues to make on the lives of children and families nationwide.

Although no financial support has yet been received through this particular GlobalGiving project, FMIC remains deeply committed to serving patients in need through its Patient Welfare Program. Since its inception in 2006, the program has supported approximately 900,000 patients, representing a cumulative financial impact of nearly 63 million United States dollars. This enduring commitment ensures that financial limitations do not prevent access to life-saving treatment.

FMIC’s cardiac services remain a critical component of this mission, particularly for children suffering from congenital heart disease. The following case from February 2026 highlights the profound impact of timely medical intervention and coordinated support.

Arezo’s Story: A Small Heart and a Major Victory

Arezo, a six-year-old child weighing only sixteen kilograms, entered life with significant challenges,  having lost their mother at birth. Over the years, repeated chest infections, rapid heartbeats, fatigue, and shortness of breath increasingly affected the child’s growth, daily functioning, and overall well-being. After persistent symptoms and limited improvement, the family brought Arezo to the cardiology clinic at FMIC.

Critical Diagnosis and Life-Saving Intervention

Under the care of Dr. Saber Safi, paediatric cardiology specialist at FMIC, Arezo underwent a thorough evaluation. Echocardiography revealed a large Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) with left-to-right shunting, resulting in dilation of the left side of the heart and placing the child at risk of serious complications.

Given the severity of the condition and the child’s fragile health, the cardiology team recommended transcatheter PDA device closure as the most appropriate intervention. With the kind support and coordination of La Chaîne de l’Espoir, the necessary budget for the procedure was secured, allowing the intervention to be carried out at FMIC without delay.

A Successful Outcome

The procedure was performed using femoral artery and vein access, with placement of an 8×10 LifeTech device. Post-procedure echocardiography confirmed a well-positioned device with no residual shunt. Arezo recovered smoothly, without any complications, and demonstrated marked improvement shortly thereafter.

A Renewed Chance at Life

Today, thanks to the expertise, compassion, and teamwork of the FMIC cardiology team, Arezo has been granted a healthier future and a renewed opportunity to thrive. This outcome reflects FMIC’s unwavering commitment to providing advanced care for children with congenital heart disease, regardless of their families’ ability to pay.

Looking Ahead: A Future of Greater Impact

We remain deeply grateful to all partners and supporters who stand with FMIC in its mission to deliver hope, healing, and high-quality care to the most vulnerable. With the celebration of its twentieth anniversary, FMIC carries an even greater responsibility to extend its reach and save more lives than ever before. As we reflect on two decades of service, we also look forward with renewed commitment and ambition, relying on the continued generosity and partnership of our friends and supporters to help us transform these aspirations into reality.

We look forward to continued engagement through the GlobalGiving community to expand our impact and reach more children in need.
