Dear Global Givers,
When El Sistema Greece celebrated its 10th anniversary this September, 16-year-old Rea had more than one reason to be excited. As one of the first children to join the organisation, she had grown up alongside it. And now, ten years later, she was helping bring its anniversary celebration to life.
Originally from Albania, Rea joined El Sistema Greece in its early years. Music has remained part of her life ever since, with the violin becoming her instrument and the organisation a community she has continued to be part of as she has grown older.
Her father once shared with us that he would not have been able to offer Rea all these opportunities on his own. His words reflect an important part of what El Sistema Greece strives to do: create opportunities for children to explore music, develop their abilities, and experience things that might otherwise have remained out of reach.
This September, during El Sistema Greece FIESTA, our festival celebrating ten years of music and community, we had the opportunity to see what that commitment can mean over time.
Rea was not only among the young musicians performing at the festival. She also took an active role in its organisation. During the anniversary concert, she welcomed the audience and introduced the opening performance, before picking up her violin to play with different musical ensembles.
What makes this moment particularly meaningful is seeing how Rea continues to grow within a community she has been part of since childhood. Ten years after joining El Sistema Greece, she was not only performing at its anniversary celebration but also contributing to bringing it to life, taking initiative and sharing in the responsibility of making this special event happen.
Her journey offers a perspective on the impact of long-term access to music education that cannot be captured by the number of lessons taught or concerts performed. It shows what can happen when young people have the opportunity to remain part of a musical community as they grow, not only developing their skills but also finding new ways to contribute to it.
In the context of the ten years of El Sistema Greece, we celebrate a community that continues to grow and evolve through the children and young people who are part of it, shaped by their voices, ideas, and contributions, both for themselves and for those who will follow.
With gratitude,
Friends of El Sistema Greece
