On September 1, Love to Langa sponsored a workshop for teachers and parents in an informal settlement called Jim Se Bos, outside of Cape Town. All of the attendees were encouraged to participate in learning and sharing. The activities were simple enough to engage on a level that was appropriate and easy to grasp. The idea was to invite and show parents how they can support and assist in their child’s education through play at no extra cost to them. We covered the basic concepts for the foundation of learning - color, shape, size, position, numbers through fun activities using tops and lids, advertisements, polystyrene trays and hand cream and a scrap piece of paper which we turned into a book!
Jim se Bos is a community consisting of about 300 shacks built on private land on the outskirts of Philippi, which is where we are building our Swim Academy. As a result of it being private land, it is not provided with services or amenities from the City, although they have brought water and toilet facilities and a dumpster to the perimeter of the area. This area houses people ravaged by poverty. Attendance at school is at best, irregular and at worst, not at all. Some children do not even have birth certificates, so school attendance becomes a challenge as they are required for enrollment.
