Dear friend of Mama Respond,
Our Strong Mamas group continues to meet weekly, so their numbers are on the up and up, proving the need for such community support for mamas doing it tough.
Grabbing opportunities by the horns has led the mamas to organise themselves into self-help community groups that initiate table banking. In this unofficial banking method, each participant contributes weekly to the pool with agreed long-term investment goals.
Even more impressive are their goals. They have each identified a gap in their community and are endeavouring to fill it. One group is opening a water station, another is starting a farming project, and another is opening a daycare centre in response to the challenges they themselves face when trying to get care for their children with disabilities. Most daycare centres will not take a child with a special need, and those that do, charge double before inevitably asking them to stop attending.
Our Strong Mamas group are making us very proud as they await their training centre, which we are yet to fund. We applied for a few grants this year, which we should hear back about in the coming weeks. But, of course, your support is invaluable. If you can't donate, talk about us - connect us with people and businesses who value women's independence, financial independence, and equal opportunities. This is how we can make a real change together.
Many thanks,
Erin Hegarty
