The past few months have been wildly exciting for us with the Albellanas community gardening project! After coalescing a group of committed community workers who have pledged to work the crop (in return for basic food donations for their families so they don't have to take other work until the harvest comes in), preparing the ground, repairing the well, fencing the land, and planting the seed we're starting to see growth to harvest!
The squash looks fantastic and our main agronomist - Junior - has been working to secure a reliable local market source to sell the produce. The first and largest market that we're looking for established vendors to partner with for sales is in main city of Sebaco. Sebaco is the largest produce vendor and where all Managua restaurants and food wholesalers purchase their produce. With a secure sales partner in Sebaco we'll start focusing on helping our Albellanas garden employees establish working contacts in smaller but closer towns of Jicaral and Mina La India for long-term sales.
Your giving is helping get a GREAT agriculture project off the ground which is really changing the lives of people living in one of the most impoverished villages in Nicaragua. The participating families are taking a huge step of faith to focus full-time work on making the project a success and not pursuing other work which would only meet short-term needs. Continue to share the news with friends and invite them to be part of this sustainable solution to local hunger and job needs in Nicaragua!
