Regent’s Park’s hedgehogs have suffered during the winter! They have not followed their natural cycle and have not hibernated. The population is still more at risk. SEN’s project to improve the understanding of their behaviour and life factors is even more urgent!
We have now four tracking options under development with different network technologies, device size and weight, length of battery life, cost, etc, in order to find the best solution for these animals. See the example above.
These options have been presented to the Royal Parks Foundation who believe that they hold real potential as new generation bio-trackers, applicable not just to this programme but to the conservation of many other species. They will be cheaper and more effective than current devices. The developers have committed to producing prototypes for trialling, further funding permitting.
Thanks to the Trackahog project, a network of technical collaborators is being formed and a whole new generation of bio-trackers is in the pipeline that will help transform the way problems facing wildlife today can be tackled and solved. Our aim is to create an open source catalogue of solutions for the developer community to continue to work on.
