Know your rights under Nigerian laws

By Theresa Odibu | Executive director

Project Title:

"Voices Without Borders: LGBTQ+ Rights Awareness Micro-Campaign"
Location:

Nigeria (with a focus on online outreach and safe community engagement)

Duration:

3 Months

Project Objective:
To raise awareness and provide support for LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria through low-cost digital campaigns, community sensitization, and safe online resource sharing over a period of 3 months.

Background:
LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria face significant discrimination, legal challenges, and social exclusion. Due to the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014, organizing public events or advocacy can be risky. However, small, low-key digital and community-based initiatives can still make an impact in raising awareness and offering support.

Project Activities:

1. Digital Awareness Campaign (Free platforms)
Design and post infographics on LGBTQ+ rights, mental health, and safety tips.

Use WhatsApp to circulate these materials within safe networks.

Topics include:

“Know Your Rights under Nigerian Law”

“Mental Health Resources for LGBTQ+ Nigerians”

“Online Safety for Queer Communities”

2. Safe Peer Support Circles (Online)

Create WhatsApp groups for peer support and mental health check-ins.

Invite 10-15 trusted participants per group.

Share curated weekly affirmations, legal info, and emotional wellness content.

Distribute it digitally via email and WhatsApp.

Expected Outcomes:

10+ people reached via social media infographics

10-15 people engaged in safe peer support groups

Sustainability:
Peer groups may continue after the project ends as safe spaces.

Monitoring & Evaluation:
Monthly reports from peer group moderators
